Accounts and net worth

Balances, net worth, and account details on the Accounts tab.

The Accounts tab shows every household account, its balance, and the household's net worth over time. Accounts are grouped by type:

TypeExamplesCounts as
DepositoryChecking, savings, money marketAsset
CreditCredit cardsLiability
Investment / Brokerage401(k), IRA, taxable brokerageAsset
LoanMortgage, auto, student loansLiability
OtherAnything that doesn't fitDepends on balance

Balances come from the provider's latest sync and can differ from what you can spend because of pending transactions or holds. Pull down on the Accounts tab to load the latest data Penny has received. This doesn't force your bank to send new data.

Net worth

Net worth is assets minus liabilities across every account in the household.

Net worth uses recorded balance snapshots and carries the last balance forward between them. Each account's history starts with its first available snapshot. Importing older transactions doesn't reconstruct earlier balances.

A sudden change in the chart can mean an account was added, closed, or deleted, or caught up after a gap in syncing. Accounts in other currencies convert at each day's rate, so net worth also moves with exchange rates.

You can compare the household's net worth with market benchmarks on the chart.

Investment accounts

Brokerage and retirement accounts connect through Plaid and count toward net worth. Penny shows their balance history and any transactions the provider supplies, but not individual holdings, cost basis, or returns. Categorize contributions as transfers.

Account details

Tap an account to see its transactions, balance history, and connection status. From there you can rename it or change its logo, which only affects Penny, or close or delete it.

Every household also has a manual Cash account for transactions you enter yourself.
