Manual transactions

Record cash and other activity that doesn't come from a bank.

Every household has a manual Cash account for transactions you enter yourself. Connected accounts don't accept manual entries.

Adding one

From the Transactions tab, tap Add, or open Cash and tap +. Set the type (expense or income), amount, date, account, and name, plus a merchant, category, tags, and notes if you want them.

Manual transactions count in cashflow like any other, and can be split, tagged, and matched by rules and recurrings. Adding one doesn't change the account's balance.

You can edit everything except the amount and account. If either is wrong, delete the entry and add it again. Deleted entries can be restored from the archive.

Cash withdrawals

Count cash spending once, in one of two ways:

  • Track each purchase. Categorize the ATM withdrawal as a transfer and enter each cash purchase in Cash.
  • Track only the withdrawal. Categorize the withdrawal as an expense and don't enter the purchases.

Reimbursements

If you paid $200 and a friend repaid $150 in cash, keep the original expense and enter the $150 repayment in the same expense category. That category then shows $50 of spending. If the repayment arrives through your bank, categorize that transaction the same way instead.

The Cash account

You can rename Cash, change its image, close it, or delete it. Penny doesn't yet support creating other manual accounts or editing their balances.
