Multiple currencies

How Penny converts accounts in different currencies into one household total.

Each household has one base currency. Accounts and transactions can be in any currency. Penny keeps each one's original amount and converts it to the base currency for totals, charts, and net worth.

The owner can change the base currency in Settings → Edit household → Currency. Reports recalculate, and original amounts stay as they were.

How conversion works

Each amount converts at the rate for its own date. A March 15 purchase uses that day's rate, so past totals don't shift with today's rate. Balances convert the same way, which means net worth moves with exchange rates even when no balance changes.

If there's no rate for a date, Penny uses the latest earlier one. If none exists, the report shows an error rather than a partial total. Contact us if it persists.

A domestic card used abroad usually reports amounts already converted, and Penny uses what the bank sends.

Rule amounts

A rule's amount condition is in the rule's own currency, and other currencies are converted before comparing. A rule for "above $500" can match a €480 transaction if its converted value exceeds $500.
