Duplicates

Fix accounts or transactions that show up twice.

Duplicate accounts

Connecting the same account twice can count its balance and overlapping transactions twice. This usually happens when:

  • Two household members both connect a joint account. Only one of you needs to.
  • A bank is added again instead of reconnected.
  • One bank is listed under two institution entries.

If the bank provides a stable account ID, Penny spots the match while you connect and offers to link the accounts. Linking keeps the existing account with its history, categories, and rules.

Otherwise, watch for net worth that roughly doubles or two accounts with the same last four digits, then:

Compare the pair on the Accounts tab and keep the one with the longer history.

If that one's connection is broken, reconnect it.

Delete the other.

Duplicate transactions

Two records for one purchase can come from a repeat import after reconnecting, or from a purchase you entered manually that later synced from a card. Penny flags likely duplicates it finds during imports, though not every one.

Settings → Review Potential Duplicates collects flagged groups. For each one:

  • Delete the extra record once you've confirmed it's the same purchase.
  • Keep a transaction that's real to clear its flag.
  • None Are Duplicates clears the whole group.

Penny remembers your decision and won't flag the same pair again. Deleted records can be restored from the archive. If duplicates keep appearing, look for an account connected twice.

Not duplicates

  • Pending and posted: when a pending charge posts, Penny replaces it and keeps your edits. If both remain, compare them with your bank before deleting either.
  • Refunds: keep them as separate positive transactions in the original purchase's category.
  • Two real charges: if your bank shows both, dispute the extra one with the merchant or bank.
