Organizing
Categories
Classify transactions for spending and income totals.
A category describes what a transaction was for, such as groceries, rent, or salary. The household shares one set of categories, managed in Settings → Categories.
Creating one
Each category has a name, an emoji, a type, and an optional group. The name and emoji must each be unique within the household.
Choose a type:
- Expense: money spent. The default.
- Income: money received, such as salary, dividends, or interest.
- Transfer: money moving between your own accounts. Excluded from both income and spending.
A transfer in an expense category inflates spending.
Category groups
Groups roll related categories up in Cashflow. For example, Groceries,
Restaurants, and Coffee can sit in Food & Drink, which shows a group total and
a breakdown by category. A category can also stay ungrouped. For labels that cut
across categories, use tags.
Renaming, merging, and deleting
- Renaming updates the name on every transaction.
- Combining categories: filter transactions by the category you want to remove, select them, and assign the category you want to keep. Then delete the empty category.
- Deleting leaves its transactions uncategorized. Check for rules that use a category before deleting it.
